Hi. I'm currently a junior at Shippensburg University. My major is GeoEnvironmental Studies w a concentration in GIS. I completed the first two GIS courses provided. I was instructed to take a Cartography course because I like to make maps "pretty" (during my GIS courses I spent my time worrying about the look of my map rather than worrying about the analysis), which I'm doing this semester. I was wondering if any of you have any suggestions as to your opinion of cartography or even websites I could go to that would also expand my knowledge of a cartographer.

Thankyou very much,
Julie

Hi Julie,

I am by no means an expert, but I thought I'd offer you some information that may or may not be helpful to you. Let me give you some background on my GIS interests so you know where I'm coming from.

I have been interested in GPS since first learning about it years ago when it was still restricted to military use. Two years ago, my good wife bought me a basic Garmin eTrex for my birthday. I have been using it and an upgraded eTrex Legend Cx ever since.

The church I attend (http://yourlifespring.org/) is doing some missionary work in an area of Haiti for which there are no maps. I'm the tech geek at church, so I offered to make some maps based on GPS tracks we receive from our folks who go down there on mission trips. We are also going to be hiring a Haitian to walk the plethora of trails that link the villes in the region. We will be equipping him with a GPS receiver and he will be e-mailing his data to me for inclusion in the maps.

For this project, I will be using OziExplorer (http://www.oziexplorer.com/)to process the GPS tracks into individual .PLT files (OziExplorer Track Point Files)--one for each distinct trail or road. I will group the PLT files by region and reference them in Polish Map Format files. I will then use cGPSmapper (http://cgpsmapper.com/) to compile these Polish Map Format files into map files that can be uploaded to a Garmin device. I have had luck uploading these maps so far using sendmap20 (http://gps.chrisb.org/en/download.htm).

This is very basic but functional cartography. I don't know if any of this is applicable to your interests, but I thought I would offer it up anyway and let you decide. Best of luck with your studies.

Brian
